A blaze destroyed a 2-story home and left a mother and two children homeless Friday afternoon on the outskirts of Pearl Highlands in Otay Ranch.
A caretaker at the home saw a fire in the garage and alerted police and firefighters from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department who were called at 4:15 p.m. to 2769 Steinway Place, west of Linden Avenue.
“He just said there was a fire, and our hearts sank,” said family friend Jose Sanchez.
The fire was still spreading when firefighters arrived and had taken over control of the scene by 5 p.m., fire officials said.
At least 25 firefighters from the SDFD and San Diego County Fire-Rescue crews were dispatched. Five engines, two ladder trucks, one brush truck, a patrol unit, a battalion chief and paramedics were also sent.
When fire crews arrived, flames were popping out of the garage and the roof of the 2-story house.
The caretaker doused the flames, but at least one home was destroyed, possibly two, and a car was also consumed.
The caretaker’s 2-year-old son was inside the home with a neighbor’s daughter, 8, at the time of the fire, Sanchez said.
Both the mother and the 8-year-old were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The mother and the 2-year-old have been identified, but Sanchez couldn’t release their names.
The caretaker was uninjured.
Although it’s still unclear what sparked the fire, the woman who lives in the home said the caretaker left to help her two daughters, ages 6 and 8, when the fire broke out.
“We’re just a family praying for those two little girls,” Sanchez said.
No other homes in the area were damaged, said Lt. Chris Lowe, a department spokesman.
