Creating layers
Photoshop has layers, as described in Chapter 3, that enable you to create multiple views of an image in separate areas of the file that have varying transparency, or pixel opacity. To add a new view (layer), choose Layer⇒New Layer or press Shift+Ctrl+N (Shift-Option-N on the Mac). When you create a new layer, Photoshop creates a new layer group. Layers can be added to the Background layer for art-paint effects and to the Paper Clip layer for drawing effects.
You can view your layers in the Layers palette (the white window in Figure 5-1). To add a new view (layer), select a view by using the drop-down menu that appears when you select a layer, and then press the Add Layer button. The image in the layer is visible only in that particular view.

Selecting and altering layers
To select a layer, open the Layers palette by choosing Window⇒Layers. Click the layer you want to select. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Click to select layers.
To alter a layer’s properties, open the Layers palette (see the first part of Figure 5-1) and then select a layer. You can choose layers by using the drop-down menu at the top of the palette. You can then change the layer’s opacity or hide it. You can also use layer masks, as discussed in the section “Creating and using layer masks” later in this chapter.
Creating images from layers
Photoshop enables you to use all of the elements in your layers to create a new image. You can move, resize, or edit the layers as a group. When you make changes to a layer, Photoshop creates a new image on a new layer based

How to use Photoshop Elements?
To open Elements, open the folder and double-click on the PhotoshopElements.app file.
When you launch Photoshop Elements, you will see the splash screen. Then there is a message about the release of a new product. Click the “Update” button to download it.
After the update, you will be in the product.
You can open the program and change its language.

Can dietary fats increase the risk of colon cancer?
The Western dietary pattern, characterized by low intake of fruits, vegetables, fibre and high intake of fat, meat, dairy and processed foods, has been associated with high risk of colon cancer in numerous studies. However, the role of specific fats in the etiology of the disease is unclear. This paper reviews the animal and clinical evidence supporting potential causal roles for different types of dietary fats in colorectal carcinogenesis. The results from laboratory studies show that diets rich in saturated fat, trans-fatty acids and cholesterol result in increased occurrence of aberrant crypt foci, hyperproliferation and malignant transformation of colonic crypt cells, which are precursors to colon cancer. There is limited evidence that high intake of polyunsaturated and n-6 polyunsaturated fats may also be associated with increased risk of colonic neoplasia. Clinical studies have consistently shown a positive correlation between dietary fat intake and high colorectal cancer incidence in Western populations. However, observational studies are subject to confounding because they do not allow to distinguish between cause and effect. The possibility exists that higher consumption of dietary fats may be due to reduced energy intake, although this effect is probably small for most populations. In addition, the cohort studies do not exclude the possibility that certain fats, rather than energy intake, may act as promoters of colorectal neoplasia.
