After 5 years, I’ve released my first iPhone application!
It’s called “iEasy” and it allows you to use iPad and iPhone for real-time video playing to many sites such as YouTube, Vimeo or FlowPlayer (Flash video player).
I think I might be the first to release an iPhone application which uses mainly HTML5 (and it’s WebKit), not Flash, to display its content.
After writing the project code (and using Apple’s iPhone simulator), I was able to display video from YouTube, Vimeo and the FlowPlayer simultaneously.
The video libraries are stored in local SQLite database, so the “front end” is driven by JavaScript and using asynchronous calls to the database.
The backend is implemented in Objective-C.
I had to solve two major problems:
I had to handle the http responses returned from YouTube/Vimeo (and especially from FlowPlayer) without “cache” the result HTML page, because when the user tries to pause/play on the video, the new content takes longer to be downloaded than the previous content, and so, the browser has to be stopped to display the new content (or in our case, it has to be refreshed).
I had to synchronize the videos played by different tabs for the iPad. The videos are played in separate tabs, and for this, a simple mechanism has been implemented.
If you pause the videos by clicking on the video play button while browsing a different tab, all the videos will be interrupted, but when you press the play button again, only the videos which
