Vector graphics software

Vector graphics are images in mathematical form. They are created with _vector_ tools, which use mathematical equations to describe geometric shapes, the pixels of an image, and anything else that can be drawn on a computer screen. In vector graphics, you do not see any details other than color (such as edges, lines, and shading) and shapes that you create or modify in the program. The advantage of this technique is that you can scale up or down to any size without losing quality. You can also reuse the same shapes and objects many times over (see Figure 11-7).

You’d then have to trash the work you created and rethink your approach.

This is why professional designers get training.

Many designers work with amazing tools. It’s extremely satisfying when you work in these types of environments with speed and understanding.

You’ll be happy to know that this is the way most designers learn. You can learn by trial and error, and through trial and error you’re bound to hit on a great workflow.

However, there are some things you can’t learn from trial and error. For example, there are many principles you can’t get to know through just experience. You need to learn them formally. You need to understand what they are and why they are.

Because that is what all art is: understanding and knowing.

All this is to say, don’t just practice. Practice in the right way.

Your definition of design

Design is the foundation of all creative fields. We designers are always told to “think like a designer” or to “think for the user”. We need to have a good idea of what is functional, what is important and what is not.

As a teenager in the 1970s, Jeff Heebner, a California native, learned how to ride his skateboard on the streets of Santa Monica, spending weekends on the beach and during the week “trying to learn to play football,” he says, laughing. “I didn’t succeed.”

Anyone who watches television today can see from the rise of the drama-horror hybrid, the mockumentary and the biopic, science fiction is the latest to get the same kind of treatment. And there’s a whole new science. So what is it, and why are we seeing it?

As fictional universes grow, so too are the different types of science being played out. Fiction is such an important part of our cultural landscape, we are now seeing more new sciences being created, partly in response to a science-fictional world, but also by a new generation of people entering the world of science. The new fiction is about the new ideas.

The rapid-fire team science of Star Trek is what put the recent Star Trek movie on the map. In that film, worlds of different science were pitted against each other and the script got the balance right: the logic of Star Trek was used to explain the logic and technology of the century. But Star Trek was fiction: it was not being set up as the foundation of a real political world.

Substitutions of the catalytic histidine residue in piperazinohexaazatricyclo[,6)]decane-2,4-dione dehydrogenase from Streptomyces sp. strain NEAU-HNV7179.
Piperazinohexaazatricyclo[,6)]decane-2,4-dione dehydrogenase (PHDD) catalyzes the oxidation of β-piperazino-α-hydroxy-ketone with NADH. The reaction is unique to the type I dinuclear manganese-containing PHDD, and its fine mechanism and structure-function relationship have never been determined to date. To identify the catalytic residues responsible for the unique function of PHDD, we mutated the PHDD catalytic histidine residue to the corresponding residues of PHDDs from other species and investigated the properties of the mutant PHDDs. The activity of PHDDs against various β-piperazino-α-hydroxy-ketone analogues decreased with increasing substrate length, especially with the longer substrate analogues. However, no single enzyme mutation could compensate for the substrate length, which resulted in enzyme insufficiency.
